NHRA Potomac Nationals: A Thrilling Opening Day
The NHRA Potomac Nationals kicked off with a bang, showcasing some of the most talented drivers in the world. The opening day of qualifying saw some impressive performances and unexpected twists, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats.
Pro Stock Motorcycle Q1
The Pro Stock Motorcycle class was a sight to behold. Charles Poskey, the first racer down the track, set a record with a time of 7.010, but it didn't last long. Kelly Clontz quickly took the lead with a 6.832, only to be outdone by Jianna Evaristo, who clocked in at 6.81. The real thrill came from Chase Van Sant and Ryan Oehler, who went head-to-head, both achieving speeds of 200.32 mph. John Hall then blew everyone away with a mind-boggling 202.55-mph lap. Angie Smith, a fierce competitor, made her husband, Matt, proud with a 6.69 at 202.97, raising questions about Matt's prowess as a tuner versus a rider.
World champion Richard Gadson secured the No. 3 spot with a 6.754, while his teammate, two-time world champion Gaige Herrera, had a less-than-ideal start, spinning the tires and shutting off early.
Pro Stock Q1
In the Pro Stock category, Greg Anderson dominated with a 6.494, securing the top spot. His KB Titan teammate, Matt Latino, surprised everyone with a 6.504, earning the No. 2 position. The new track records were set, with Latino's top speed of 212.56 mph. World champion Dallas Glenn qualified fourth with a 6.510, closely followed by Jeg Coughlin Jr. at 6.512. The race for the first-round lane choice is on, with most cars qualifying successfully, except for Erica Enders and Troy Coughlin Jr., who squared their tires on the launch.
Funny Car Q1
The Funny Car class witnessed a battle of the titans. Chicago winner Chad Green, leveraging his crew chief's experience at Maryland International Raceway, made history with the track's first three-second pass at 3.985. Alexis deJoria, a Southern Nationals runner-up, qualified No. 2 with a 4.025, just ahead of J.R. Todd's 4.056 at a record-breaking speed. Dave Richards, with a 4.056, was an early surprise leader, ending up fourth. World champion Austin Prock, who had a strong showing in Chicago, continued his upward trend with a solid 4.10, securing the No. 8 spot.
Top Fuel Q1
Doug Kalitta, the No. 1 qualifier at the last two races, once again led the field with a 3.817, leaving his competitors in the dust. Maddi Gordon, a high-flying rookie, impressed with a 3.840 at a track-record 330.39 mph, securing the No. 2 spot. Shawn Langdon, Kalitta's teammate and points leader, sat third at 3.844. Clay Millican, with more Top Fuel experience at MIR than most, rounded out the top half with a 3.927. With 16 Top Fuel entries, all competitors will battle it out on Sunday.
The Potomac Nationals have set the stage for an exhilarating weekend of racing, leaving fans eager for more.
